The photographs which follow are representative of the equipment seen (or to be seen) on tours of Central and South America organized and directed by TRAINS UNLIMITED, TOURS.

They are not yet captioned nor further identified other than as made available by TRAINS UNLIMITED, TOURS or contributions from sharp-eyed and knowledgeable viewers or by the Webmaster.

Please bear in mind that these are archived photos; current ones are on the Trains Unlimited, Tours pages, especially in their Photo Gallery.

All images herein, unless otherwise noted, are courtesy of TRAINS UNLIMITED, TOURS - all rights reserved.

{Certain scanned images from TU,T prints were so dark that they were lightened
artificially to show some detail (suffix "lt").  Others were marked with an ink
that was not permanent and offset onto the front of the facing photograph, which was
altered to minimize the visual impact of the offset lettering (suffix "al").
The keyed identifications below these images are so noted on the pages on which they appear.}

[If you have never tried retouching over clouds and around catenary wires;
it's just loads of fun!  :·)  - SB,III]

Photographs identifed as "thumbnails" are in fact low-resolution copies of the larger (in some cases, VERY much larger) originals, to speed loading, not to save page space.

The keyed identifications for Central and South American photos are as follows:

xxs0xx = 35mm slide
xx30xx = 3" x 5" (3½" x 4¾") print
xx40xx = 4' x 6" (4" x 57/8") print
xx50xx = 5" x 7" (5¾ x 6¾") print
xx80xx = 8" x 10" print

    (Print sizes are approximate; they vary a bit.)

{There are also a few duplications, where possibly more than one size print,
or a slide, was supplied; they have been included.)

Sample images from the various country pages follow;
some have been reduced to load faster without thumbnailing and
are available at full resolution on the indicated pages:

In spite of the sample above, these two volcanic plug shots are so spectacular
that they are shown here:

Twenty-four (24) slides were scanned commercially and have been added to these pages {19 Oct 02).

The slides show some of the oddest "critters" ever seen;
it would appear that anything that runs gets put on railroad wheels;
{the following, both from Peru, are two of my favorites - SB,III}

Portola, California, 'way up over Donner Pass in the High Sierras, near Lake Tahoe, Nevada, is where Trains Unlimited, Tours is located; it is also the home of the Portola Railroad Museum, operated by the Feather River Rail Society, a group primarily devoted to the Western Pacific RR.  The Portola Museum is home to the only surviving twin-engined boxcab oil(diesel)-electric, the Foley Bros. #110-1.

For more oddball rail equipment see the Webmaster's Odder Boxcabs and related weird equipment on his Rail-Auto page.

If you like electric boxcabs, Clint Chamberlin has a whole page full!  Also, there was a great feature on the twilight of "The King of the Rails", the Milwaukee Road's huge GE E-34, E-50a, and E-74 in the July 1973 TRAINS, pp. 29-38; quite literally the "End of Wire".
