The Union Pacific Railroad (AAR reporting marks UP) (NYSE: UNP), headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, is the largest railroad network in the United States. UP's route map covers most of the central and western United States west of Chicago and New Orleans. It has achieved this size thanks to purchasing a large number of other railroads, notably the Missouri Pacific, Chicago & North Western, Western Pacific, Missouri-Kansas-Texas, and the Rio Grande (including the Southern Pacific).

WDW #3017 UNION PACIFIC 33' Open Offset-Side 2-Bay Hopper Car

WDW #3017 UNION PACIFIC - This month, December, FT features the Union Pacific!

Here's the December 2008 offering from Full Throttle. It's a 33' two-bay offset-side hopper car marked for the Union Pacific Railroad. The models were manufactured with great details by Bowser Mfg., painted to a slight sheen with UP brown inside and out, and equipped with custom Hay Bros. Garage coal loads. They sport Bettendorf trucks with knuckle couplers, feature UP yellow printing, immaculate, tiny and clean, in several sized fonts, and the wonderful "Be Specific" script logo. Many Z Scale hobbyists have been asking for Western USA hoppers, waiting for a release.

The Union Pacific RR is very popular, modeled by many hobbyists throughout the USA and Europe, and as seen above, is today the result of many Railroad mergers, by favorite rail lines of our hobby. Everyone wanted a large consist, but their being handcrafted of nickel-silver and brass made the price tag for multiple units quite prohibitive. So, as a pre-Christmas surprise, FT has used it's open 33' 2-bay hopper bodies and created a lovely Holiday green BN 6-pack for the Z Scale Hobbyist! As always, Will appreciates your enthusiasm and support!

BN is one of the most popular model railroads, and these little green units are wonderful for anytime, and not just pleasantly appropriate for the Holidays!

What in the heck is
'blue coal'?

[The Shadow Knows - heh, heh, heh!^*]

Hey there, FT Friends; Uncle Will tells you this condensed story about 'blue coal'! Anthracite is a dense, hard, shiny-black, smokeless, clean-burning, coal mined in Pennsylvania and perfectly suited for home-heating. As early as 1928, for a distinguishing feature and marketing ploy, the Glen Alden Coal Co. of Ashley, Pennsylvania, sprayed the nuggets with a blue colorant as they tumbled down the loading chutes from their huge, historic Huber Breaker. During the 30's and 40's, 'blue coal' was the sponsor of the popular early radio show, "The Shadow," starring detective Lamont Cranston, whose voice was eventually dubbed by Orson Wells! Thus, 'blue coal' became an enormously popular commodity for keeping warm in the cold winters of the burgeoning urban and rural areas of America's East Coastal States! And so it remained until the advent of natural gas and fuel oil for domestic heating, well after WW II into the 1950's. In honor of these inventive entrepreneurs, FT pays tribute to the anthracite industry using Z Scale models of 33' open offset-side "billboard hoppers" adorned with the original 'blue coal' logo, and represented by several of the major rail lines that distributed this unique, ubiquitous product throughout the Northeastern USA! Hay Bros. Garage has created the very realistic 'blue coal' loads.

Here is a Special Full Throttle "Collector Pack #1" hopper release for August 2008! A wonderful 33' Offset-Side "Billboard" Hopper Car Set honoring the Anthracite Industry! It is a "Collector 4-pack" with four rail lines represented as distributors of this unusual commercial coal fabrication. Hay Bros. Garage created the realistic 'blue coal' loads and, as always, the cars are weighted and equipped with knuckle couplers. The four rail lines represented are: DL&W, CNJ, NH, and RDG.

[As an avid childhood watcher of Blue Coal deliveries in Manhattan and on Long Island
in the '40s, I can attest to the accuracy of Hay Bros.'s blue! - SB,III^@]

An article on the Huber Breaker and 'blue coal' will appear in the July-Aug. Issue of Ztrack Magazine, and a color photo of one of the FT models should be featured. Recently, after his sister and he had visited the breaker, Will was the honored guest at a "Meet and Greet" at Uncle Ron's London Bridge Collector's Toys, Ltd. in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and these models were a smashing success!

@ - [I also remember the coal being delivered by scissor-lift coal trucks with very long, highly-polished, steel chutes though which the coal ran, in a cloud of black dust, over the sidewalk and through cellar/basement windows into the coal bin; here, from the history of the Woolley Fuel Co., the oldest business in Maplewood, New Jersey (1924), is a picture of just such a truck (although the ones I remember had older (unstreamlined) cabs and were unbelievably FILTHY! Now that I think of it, some even had small doors on the sides of the dump body so that chutes could be attached in cramped quarters. - SB,III]

Will hopes you are enjoying your Summer! He has recently returned from a wonderful trip to Pennsylvania where he met with many friends, old and new. A tour of the Bowser-Stewart manufacturing facilities, forays into PA's Anthracite Coal Region, and a Saturday afternoon "meet and greet" at Uncle Ron's Shop were among the "train" activities. There was much excitement over new developments, and once again, he was able to garner many ideas for "Full Throttle" and the Z Scale Hobby.
